Lakes, lagoons and wetlands provide shelter to birds all over Greece. 449 bird species have been recorded in Greece while 196 areas have been characterized as important places for bird species. Some of the most important bird areas include the Delta of Evros and Nestos Rivers in Thrace, the Lagoons of Porto Lagos in Xanthi, Mount Olympus, Lake Kerkini in Kilkis, Prespes Lakes in North Greece, the Wetland of Alyki in Lemnos Island, Vouraikos Gorge in Peloponnese, Mount Pelion in Thessaly, Ikaria Island, White Mountains in Crete and Kalloni Bay in Lesvos Island.
