History

Archaeological finding show that Hydra was first inhabited from the Mycenaean. During the 15th century, the inhabitants of the island started to move in the mountainous areas of Hydra in order to escape from numerous pirate invasions and the attacks of the Ottomans. In 1460, Hydra welcomed refugees from Albania, Asia Minor, Epirus, Crete, Euboea and Kythnos including refugees from Peloponnese who escaped from the Russian-Turkish War during the 18th century. Owing to the lack of water of the island, the Turks had little interest on Hydra throughout the Ottoman domination. However, Hydra began to acquire a powerful naval fleet in the 17th century, which experienced a decline with the plague of 1792. The highly developed commercial fleet of Hydra and its extensive trading network with Greece and foreign countries including America, France and Spain made the island prosperous and powerful during the 18th century, which reached its peak during the Napoleonic Wars with the creation of the Merchant Marine Academy that monopolised the sea transport through the Mediterranean. The Hydriots decided to fortify the harbour with bastions and cannons, as they were afraid for attacks from the Ottoman fleet throughout the Greek War of Independence, whereas many wealthy sea captains from Hydra used vessels as worships in order to help the Greek War of Independence, including Lazaros Koundouriotis and Andreas Miaoulis. After the Second World War, the economy of Hydra experienced a decline owing to restrictions of financial assistance to the sponge fishing enterprises. However, Hydra became a centre of the art world for many artists in the 1950s.
