Rock Climbing Experiences

The wild topography and rocky terrain of Telendos makes it an ideal destination for the lovers of climbing. In 1936, Italian Andrea Di Bari discovered the climbing opportunities of Kalymnos and Telendos. The rocks of Telendos are of excellent quality and easily accessible to climbers. There are many organized climbing fields in limestone rock, with good marking in the starting points, fully equipped and totally safe, as there are stainless plugs, with a resistance of 2,5 tons each, permanently situated on the rock, which ensure the security of climbers. More specifically, the south coast has huge enormous caves that are difficult to access. The Crystal Cave is one of the most interesting climbing fields bolted with stainless steel bolts along with Canyon of the Princess due to the multiple faces that create canyons. Archaeological Sites

The Ancient Theatre of Telendos hosts the remnants of the ancient theatre located on the west side of the area of Tholaria. Unfortunately, the majority of the marbles have been removed or used in building constructions.

The Necropolis of Tholaria hosts the remnants of nine funerary structures in the form of domed buildings with built tombs located five hundred meter south from the harbor.

The Workshop of the Romans hosts the remnants of a pottery workshop from the late roman period located in the seaside area of Vlihada.

Churches and Monasteries

The Basilica of Agios Vasilios is the best preserved Christian basilica in both islands Kalymnos and Telendos. It is a beautiful three aisled byzantine basilica that was built in the 5th century close to Horio. The Basilica of Agia Triada is an old basilica located close to the beach of Hohlakas. It is an impressive monument that was built in the 6th century.The Basilica of Potha is a three aisled basilica, half of which is sunken, on the coastal alley of the harbor.

Castles

The Castle of Agios Konstantinos is a byzantine fortress located on the northern side of the island. The castle hosts traces of the medieval village that used to exist across from the area of Kastelli built on the rocky terrain in an altitude of two hundred fifty meters. Today, the surviving walls exist along with the remnants of houses and the church of Agios Konstantinos and Eleni built on the remains of the basilica.

Promenades & Villages

Telendos Town is the sole village of Telendos located on the east side of the island. The lovely settlement has an authentic character with traditional houses and labyrinthine alleys. In fact, Telendos has been declared as a traditional settlement of the Dodecanese architecture. Hiking: Telendos hosts numerous paths ideal for lovers of hiking. (1) One of the most beautiful routes starts from the harbour of Telendos and leads to the highest peak on the area of Rahi. (2) Another interesting trail starts from the north side of the harbour of Telendos and leads to the basilicas of Agios Vasilios and Paleopanagia. (3) It is also worth following the route that starts from the beach of Paradisos and leads to the medieval settlement of Agios Konstantinos.

Beaches

Hohlakas is a sandy and pebbled beach with crystal clear waters located on the south side of the island. It is a secluded beach ideal for those looking for total privacy. The beach is accessible after a climb over the hill following the pathway.

Paradise is a sandy and pebbled beach with crystal clear waters located on the northeast side of the island. It is one of the most naturist beaches of the island. The beach is well organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, and a tavern.

Potha is a sandy beach with crystal clear waters located on the northeast side of the island. It is a well-organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Pnigmenos is a sandy beach with crystal clear waters located on the north side of the island. It is an isolated beach ideal for those looking for tranquility. 

Papa Mihalis is a sandy beach with crystal clear waters located on the north side of the harbor. It is one of the most popular beaches of the island owing to its close proximity to the town of Telendos.

The local products of the island include the cheeses of kopanisti and touloumotiri , the sweet spoons of tomato and grape, thyme honey and herbs and spices.

The local specialties of the island include fylla, a dish made from stuffed vegetable with rice, kakavia, a fish soup, and mouri, a dish made of stuffed lamb or goat.

Events & Festivals

Every Easter, the Feast of Sponge takes place in Telendos. After dining together, the residents of the small community celebrate the departure of the sponge divers.

Every 21st of May, the traditional celebration in honor of Agios Konstantinos takes place in the Chapel of Agios Konstantinos.

Every 15th of August, the traditional celebration in honor of Virgin Mary takes place in the Telendos hosting a series of folklore festivities.

History & Mythology

Mythology

According to mythology, the beautiful princess of Pothea was residing in the island of Telendos while prince Andronicus lived across the channel in Castelli. The princess was transformed to a stone when shed tried to murder herself, as she through that her prince was drowned. When she threw herself off the cliff, a fairy transformed her into a rock to save her. Even today, one can see her face in the south side of the mountain of Telendos.

History

According to Homer, Telendos was one of the Islands of the complex of Kalydnos Islands along with the other small islands of Kalymnos. In ancient years, the island probably belonged to the municipality of Kalymnos. A series of archaeological findings of the Late Roman Era suggest the fact that the island has been inhabited in the Hellenistic Period and expanded in the Roman Period, while it reached its peak during the Christian Era.

Travel & Transport

By Boat (0.7 Nautical Miles): Telendos is accessible by boat from the harbor of Mirties on island of Kalymnos. The journey usually lasts thirty minutes.
