Known as the Flower of the East from the Venetians, this island will find the way to enchant you, especially in spring. Every spring, Zakynthos is at its best; verdant landscapes with pine covered mountains and fertile plains, crystalline seashores, pleasant walks in the footsteps of history and festive customs of Easter will give a distinctive color to your journey. Alloy of wild beauty and sea saltiness, with a background mosaic of culture, Zakynthos is ready to unveil its mysteries to you! It is no coincidence that Homer used to call her Ylyessa, aka full of trees, as nature paints the sea and the mountains with breathtaking colours. History & Mythology

Mythology

According to mythology, Zakynthos, the son of Dardanos who was the king of Troy, was the first inhabitant of the island. In fact, Homer first mentioned the island in the Iliad and Odyssey, who stated that the son of King Dardanos and his men colonized the island around 1.500 BC.

History

Archaeological excavations show that the island has been inhabited since the Neolithic times. Homer first mentioned the island in the Iliad and Odyssey, who stated that the son of King Dardanos, Zakynthos, and his men colonized the island around 1.500 BC. Thereafter, the island was dominated from King Arkeisos of Kefalonia, grandfather of Odysseus from Ithaca, who became the next king of Zakynthos. Due to the strategic geographical position of the island and its fertile land, the Zakynthians became wealthy and established numerous colonies in the islands of Crete and Paros. During the Persian Wars, the island remained neutral while it took part in the Athenian Alliance during the Peloponnesian War. However, Zakynthos fell under the Lacedemonians who established an oligarchic political system, following the fall of the Athenians in the expedition against Sicily in Italy. Nonetheless, the Zakynthians managed to restore their democratic political system. After the Macedonian Wars, the island fell under the domination of the Macedonians followed from the Roman Empire. At that time, Zakynthos enjoyed a great cultural development, as the governor granted the right to the inhabitants to be governed from their own laws, parliament, legislature and currency. In 34 AD, Maria Magdalene brought Christianity to the island during the rise of the Byzantine Empire. Zakynthos along with the other Ionian Islands fell under the domination of the Venetians and the Franks, followed from the rule of the King of Naples and the Prince of Florence. The Venetians reconstructed the island in an impressive architectural style, calling it the Florence of Greece and the Flower of the East. The Venetians managed to protect Zakynthos from the Ottoman Empire, as it was a feudal aristocratic oligarchic political system. Although the French republicans tried to change the political system (1789), oligarchy was established again from the Russians and the Ottomans in 1798. The French managed to re-conquer Zakynthos followed from the British domination in 1809. Zakynthos along with the other Ionian Islands became a part of the Greek State on the 21st of May of 1864. During the Second World War, the Germans and the Italians occupied Zakynthos until its liberation of September of 1944.
