After the end of the grape harvest season, an interesting idea for a trip – even a one-day trip – is offered by the region of Nemea in Peloponnese, near the border of Korinthia with Argolida. The trip down here, just 1.5 hours away from Athens, acquires a strongly wine-related character, as in Nemea viticulture and winemaking have a centuries-long tradition, especially with the red variety called “Agiorgitiko”, one of the most popular wine varieties in Greece. If you wish to follow the Wine Routes, the “Domaine Papaioannou” and “Semeli” wineries are open to visitors by prior arrangement. The latter also provides rooms for those wishing to stay overnight in the area. The archaeological interest of Ancient Nemea is the second most important reason to visit the area. The main sights are the Sanctuary of Zeus (4th century BC), which includes the ruins of the majestic temple with columns in Doric, Ionic and Corinthian order, and the stadium (320 BC), where the Nemean Games – one of the four major sporting events of ancient times – were held to honor Zeus.
