The Mastiha Festival

The island of Chios casts the spotlight on one of the most famous products of Greece, the Chios Natural Mastiha, through the second Mastiha Festival which kicked off in June and will run through a series of events till August. The Mastiha Festival aims to promote the relationship between the island’s famous mastic and the island’s history,  cultural heritage, traditional production, tradition  and contemporary artistic creation. This will be achieved through cultural projects and events that will take place in the town of Chios, the village of Kambos and the mastic medieval villages of the island. The Municipal Gallery of Chios, old mansions and interesting venues will host a series of photography exhibitions entitled as “The Journey”. The exhibition of Chios Photo Festival 2015 are supported from the Benaki Museum, the Photography Museum of Thessaloniki and the Institute of Maria Tsakos under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs.Musical, theatrical, dance and gastronomical events related to the distinctive local products including the Mastiha Feast in Elata village, the Watermelon Feast in Kalamoti village the Souma Feast in Agios Georgios Sykousis village are organized in cooperation with local cultural associations of the mastic villages of Chios. One of the highlights of the festival is the August Full Moon Concert organized in the idyllic archaeological site of Emborios in cooperation with the Festival Axanemos – Giorgos Peirantakos. The 2015 Mastiha Festival includes film screenings, exhibitions of Chios traditional products and educational activities that aim at promoting the local culture, the environment of the island and the unique mastic villages.
