History & Mythology

Mythology

Corfu played an important role in the Homeric epic of Odyssey, as it was the island of the Phaecians, where Odysseus washed up following his escape from Calypso. The bay of Paleokastritsa is considered to be the place where Odysseys was disembarked. Princess Nausika was the one who rescued Odysseus and supplied him with a ship for his journey back to Ithaca. Other arguments state that the ship collided into the isle of Pondikonissi following a thunderstorm caused from God Poseidon. Another myth associated with Corfu is the one with Argonauts and Jason’s journey to retrieve the Golden Fleece from mythical Colchis. The legend suggests that Jason and Medea took refuge at the Palace of Alkinoos in Corfu. The original name of the island, Kerkyra, is also associated with the love story between God Poseidon and nymph Korkyra, the daughter of river god Asopos. God Poseidon fell in love with her, and brought her to the island in order to gave birth to Phaecas, the first mythical king of Kerkyra.

History

Archaeological excavations show that the island has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period. Ruled from the Phoenicians, Corfu experienced development in maritime as it was an important commercial center trading with all the regions of the Adriatic Sea. Corfu requested military support from Athens for the battle against the Corinthians during the Peloponnesian War, thus forming an alliance that lasted for one century up until the Macedonians conquered Corfu in 338 BC. However, the island was successively occupied from the Spartans, the Illyrians and the Roman from 229 BC to 337 AD. Corfu managed to keep its autonomy in the Roman Empire, in return for the use of the port from the Romans. Christianity was introduced to the islanders on 40 AD from two disciples of Saint Paul. Following the separation of the Roman Empire, Corfu united with the Eastern Roman Empire and experienced regular pirate invasions from the Barbarians and the Saracens. Thereafter, Corfu came under the domination of the Normans followed from the Venetians. In 1267, the French King of Sicily introduced the Catholic religion to the island until it returned to Christianity under the Venetian rule in 1386 for four centuries. The Venetians left an everlasting legacy to Corfu, one of the most aspiring symbols of Venetian architecture in Greece. As Venice was conquered from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797, Corfu came under the domination of the French. Bonaparte came as a liberator due to the ideology of the French Liberation, who burnt the Golden Book with the privileges of the Nobles in public, and the local people began dreaming of their own independence. In 1799, the English, the Ottomans and the Russians disembarked on the island and conquered the entire island. Although an attempt to establish the Ionian State was made from Constantinople, Corfu returned to the French domination in 1807 followed from the British occupation in 1815. At that time, Corfu experienced rapid development. It is highly notable that Corfu helped the rest of Greece in the Greek Revolution although it was never under the control of the Ottomans. In May 21 of 1864, the Ionian Islands were donated to the King of Greece from the British. Corfu shared the misfortune of Greece in the years of the Second World War until the late 1860s, when the island began to experience tourist development.
