History & Mythology

Mythology

The name of the island derives from its white steep cliffs on the southernmost cape of Lefkada, which is linked with many myths. In fact, Cape Lefkada is believed to be a place where historical figures were released from their passions.  According to mythology, Apollo convinced his sister, Aphrodite, to jump from the cape in order to be released from her love for Adonis while poetess Sappho allegedly leaped to her death from the cliffs of Cape Lefkada because of her unrequited love for Phaedon. Moreover, German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld conducted numerous excavations on the island and concluded that Lefkada was the Homeric Ithaca, homeland of Odysseus.

History

Archaeological excavations show that the island has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. During the 7th century BC, Lefkada was colonized from the Corinthians who constructed the canal that separated the island from the mainland. In this period, Lefkada played an important role in the Persian Wars while its also aided the Battle of Salamina (480 BC) by sending three ships and the Battle of Plataea (479 BC) by sending eight hundred men to fight. During the Peloponnesian War, Lefkada helped the city state of Corinth on the side of the Sparta. The island became an ally of the Athenians in 343 BC in order to fight the Macedonians. However, Lefkada fell under the domination of the Macedonians. In the 3rd century BC, the island became a part of the Akarnania Federation, a geographical part of the mainland while it was conquered from the Roman Empire in 198 BC. Following the incorporation of the island to the province of Achaia in the Byzantine period, Lefkada was included to the Scheme of Kefalonia (6th century BC) and became part of the Dominion of Epirus. After the domination of Constantinople from the Frankish Empire in 1204, the island came under their command followed from the Sicilian Family of Orsini in 1294. In 1479, Lefkada was conquered from the Ottomans until the Venetian Family of Morozini took over in 1684. During that period, Lefkada flourished due to the development of trade. However, the Venetian domination of Lefkada ended when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Venice in 1797, and Lefkada became part of the French with the treaty of Campo Formio. Nonetheless, the French were conquered from the allied fleet of the British, the Russians and the Ottomans in 1799. On March 1800, the Ionian State was established in Constantinople with the intention of creating the Septinsular Republic, which lasted until 1807 when the French returned to Lefkada followed from the British in 1810, whose occupation became official with the Treaty of Paris in 1815. Following the participation of the Lefkadians to the War of Independence in 1821, the island, along with the other Ionian Islands, became a member of the Greek State in May of 1864.
