Greek History, Culture @ Your Fingertips with New Apps

Greek history and culture couldn’t be easier thanks to a series of new smartphone and tablet apps to be developed by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) New Media Lab and the Greek culture ministry. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies at Simon Frasier University (SFU) and the Greek culture ministry have joined forces to promote Greek culture, education and tourism, while bringing in revenue that will fund educational initiatives in the future.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, researcher, student, teacher, or second- and third-generation Greek, the new apps will bring Greek history, culture and heritage to your fingertips. The project comes after the success of the “Greeks” app, currently in use at the Greeks: Agamemnon to Alexander the Great exhibit now on display at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. This five-year partnership will also include the development of a pilot augmented reality facility at Athens’ National Archaeological Museum.

The mobile technology — which will include guided tours of Greek museums, as well as additional thematic units focusing on some of the most popular subjects of Greek heritage and culture — will also create new opportunities for audiences to engage with the past.
