The Capital of Thassos

The Town of Limenas , else known as Thassos Town, is the capital of Thassos located on the north side of the island. The charming harbour nestles between the verdant mountain slopes. The Ancient Agora of Thassos

The Ancient Agora of Thassos was the administrational, political and religious center of the ancient town of Thassos. It is the most important archaeological site of the island located at the center of Limenas. The monumental complex was constructed in the 6^th century BC while the gradual rebuilding of the agora started in the beginning of the 4^th century BC. The entire area was enriched with buildings, monuments, statues and temples throughout the roman period until the 3^rd century. Although the ancient agora of Thassos was destroyed through the centuries, important monuments are still visible.

The Beach of Saliara

The Beach of Saliara is one of the most beautiful beaches of Thassos. It is an exotic beach with turquoise waters and verdant vegetation located on the north side of the island.

The Mines of Thassos

The Mines of Thassos are located at the beach of Metallia. The mines of the island used to be an old factory elaborating iron. The exploitation of the mines started from a German company in 1905 but they ceased in 1912 owing to the First World War. However, the exploitation was continued from Vielle Montagne in 1925 until 1830 when it was interrupted owing to the financial crush. All the activities stopped in 1963.

The Monastery of Archangel Michael

The Monastery of Archangel Michael is located between the village of Astrida and Aliki. It is one of the most important religious centers of the island built on the edge of a steep cliff with panoramic views of the Aegean and Mount Athos. The monastery houses valuable icons and other ecclesiastical objects. The Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael made a great fortune from worshipers’ donations.

The Olive Oil Museum

The Olive Oil Museum is located close to the village of Skala Prinos. The museum is dedicated to the long tradition of Thassos on the production of virgin olive oil. One can discover the modern production process of olive il along with its long history. The museum offers a rich exhibition of photographs, many varieties of olive oils, different methods of extracting olives and the historical influence of olives in the culture of Greece. There are fourty local types of olive trees in the outdoors exhibition of the museum.

The Pool of Giola

The Pool of Giola is the natural pool of the island located in the region of Astris. The height of the rocks reaches up to eight metres where swimmers can dive into the emerald waters. Giola is accessible from a short drive from the region of Poto to Astris. Remember to bring with you water and food, since the place is quite remote.

The Village of Theologos

The Village of Theologos is one of the most beautiful villages of Thassos located on the central part of the island. Lying on a spectacular location of natural beauty, Theologos is the cultural capital of Thassos that has been declared as a traditional settlement from the Ministry of Culture. Every June, an interesting reconstitution of the traditional local wedding of Thassos is held in this village. One can visit the folklore museum of Theologos to discover the represantation of a traditional house in Thassos. Theologos is also known for the traditional products and the local specialties. A visit to this village is definetely a must!

The Acropolis of Thassos was the natural defense of the ancient town located on top of the hill of Limenas. The acropolis constituted the ultimate defense of the island. The first inhabitants of Thassos constructed the wall of the acropolis with the intention of using it as a treasury safe. The entire acropolis had been reconstructed, restored and amplified in various periods.  The acropolis used to be surrounded from the medieval castle built from the Genoese Family of Galetuzi in the first half of the 15^th century. On the second summit of the hill, one can admire the remnants of the ancient temple of Athena while the relics of the sanctuary of Pan are located on the highest point of the acropolis. It is worth following the path and ascending the verdurous hills since the scenery is magnificent.

The Sanctuary of Dioskuroi Brothers is located above the beach of Aliki. The ancient settlement dates back to the 7^th century BC. It is believed that the settlement must have been prosperous owing to the marble mining activities of the area. A part of the mining site lies on the seabed of the beach. According to historical evidence, the Parthenon of the Acropolis of Athens was partially made using the marble stone of the island.

The Chapel of Holy Apostles is located in the area of Evreokastro. The beautiful whitewashed chapel with the red tiled roof offers astonishing sunset views. One can admire remnants of archaeological interest in the wider area.

The Church of Agia Paraskevi is located in the village of Theologos. Made of stone and tiles, this church is famous from the icon of Virgin Mary. The icon was made from wax and mastic, and it is considered as a work of Apostle Luke. The church of Agia Paraskevi is among the oldest churches of Thassos.

The Church of Agios Athanasios is located in the village of Kastro. It is one of the oldest churches of the island and the jewel of the village. The church celebrates on January 18 with a large feast enlivening the remote village. From there, you can also visit the chapel of Prophet Elias standing on the edge of the village.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos is one of the oldest churches of Thassos standing in the center of Limenas. The church was built on the foundations of an ancient temple. Agios Nikolaos is the patron saint of sailors.

The Church of Panagia is located in the homonymous village. The church is dedicated to Virgin Mary built in 1833. The church is famous for its impressive wood carved temple. In the interior of the church there are numerous ecclesiastical icons from the 14^th century.

The Building of Palataki used to house the headquarters of the German company that exploited the marble quarries in Limenaria. The building is an exceptional specimen of Thassian architecture. Despite all the restoration attempts that took place, the building has not been preserved.

The Honey Factory was established from the Beekeeping Cooperative of Thassos. The factory is an excellent place to discover the locally produced honey of Thassos. If you are on the island around the 15^th of August, don’t miss the annual honey festival held in the premises of the honey factory. The honey factory is located between the villages of Skala Prinos and Skala Rahoni.

The Sculpture Museum of Vagis is located in the village of Potamia. Polignotos Vagis is a famous scuptor from Greece who gained regognition for his works in scuptures until his deapth in 1965. The museum is dedicated to the life and works of the sculptor exhibiting more than 90 works of him.

The Olive Mill of Sotirelli is a real jem located in the village of Panagia. The mill was used from the family of Sotirellis to press olives and produce olive oil. Although it does not operate commercially, visitors are invited to visit it. The mill is a beauytiful symbol of the old traditions of Thassos.

The Cave of Drakotrypa is located in the village of Panagia. The cave distinguishes for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites formations. In fact, the name of the cave means dragon cave. It was named after a stalactite that had the shape of a dragon.

The Cave of Pan is located in the area of the ancient town of Thassos. It is a small cave with a carved depiction of God Pan. Although the engraving has faded out though the years, the brilliant portrayal can be still distinguished. Pan was the god of shepherds and fields and he was also associated with music. According to mythology, he once challenged God Apollo who was the best musician. His cultivation was widely spread in antiquity and continued until the Roman times.

The Lake of Maries is an artificial lake with dense vegetation located in the village of Maries. It is a wonderful place for nature lovers and bird watchers, recommended for a peaceful promenade. To reach the lake, follow the gravel road at the end of the village. The route is easy and the road is in good condition.

Kastro is a mountainous village located on the central part of the island. Lying at an altitude of 450 meters, the traditional settlement is not visible from the coastline. It was built in this way to protect the area from pirate invasions. The name of the village derives from the remnants of a castle that once stood there built from the Genoese Family of Gateluzi. The village is surrounded from deep gorges and ravines blessed with verdant vegetation. On January 18, the village celebrates the day of the saint of Agios Athanasios with a traditional festival.

Kazaviti is a mountainous village located on the northern side of the island. The verdant settlement nestles on the mountain slopes with wonderful views to the Aegean. The name of the village derives from the Latin words Casa meaning house and Vitus meaning wine. The house of wine is definitely a mountainous village you must discover. Quaint brick houses perched on the hillsides emerge through the dense vegetation creating a beautiful atmosphere with idyllic sceneries. The most important monument of Kazaviti is the ancient theatre that hosts various musical and theatrical events in the summer. On Easter, the settlement celebrates with various religious feasts. One will have the opportunity to experience an authentic folklore festival in that season. It is highly advisable to enjoy the local specialties of the area at the charming square of Megalo Kazaviti under the shade of an ancient plane tree.

Exciting trails from rural roads to specially designed cycling routes are available in various parts of the island. (1) One of the most beautiful routes starts from Potos towards the village of Theologos. Following this trail, one will reach the village of Kastro after twenty kilometres. Off Road: Lovers of off road driving can follow the dirt roads leading to the mountains of Ypsario in order to explore the mysterious beauties of the island. The dirt and rocky roads of the island are ideal for lovers of off road driving. 4X4 vehicles are available for hire all over the island. The local specialties of the island include piperolahana, a form of spicy flavour cabbages, sfragisto stifado, a dish made from veal with herbs and vegetables, octopus with cabbages, pumpkin pie, paspalopita, a pie made from zucchinis, eggs and feta cheese saragli, an oriental Thassian dessert with nuts, dough and syrup and rose spoon sweet.

Every Carnival Period, the Carnival of Thassos takes place in he island. The carnival is renowned for the revival of old pagan customs.

Every June, the Representation of the Thassian Wedding takes place in the village of Theologos.

Every July, the Festival of Philippi takes place in the city of Kavala in Macedonia along with the island of Thassos. Numerous cultural and musical events are held for a period of one and a half month.

Every July, the Festival of Thassos takes place in the island. The festival hosts a series of musical and theatrical events for a period of two months. Some of the events are held in the Ancient Theatre of Thassos.

Every 25^th of July, the Sardine Festival takes place in the village of Skala Kallirahi. Free sardines and wine are offered to the visitors under the rhythms of traditional music.

Every 27^th of July, the traditional celebration in honour of Agios Panteleimonas takes place in the village of Kazaviti. The Festival of Kazavitiana consists from numerous cultural events including musical concerns and theatrical plays.

Every August, the Honey Festival takes place in the village of Prinos. The festival is organized from the Beekeeping Association of Thassos.

Every 15^th of August, the traditional celebration in honour of Virgin Mary takes place in the village of Panagia.

Mythology

According to mythology, Thassos was the island of the Sirens. Sirens were devilish women with a fish tail who had a beautiful voice. Every time that a man head them sing, fell under their spell. In Odyssey, the Sirens were the ones who tried to enchant Odysseus.

History

Archaeological findings show that Thasos was first inhabited from the Thracian tribes during the prehistoric times. The island was colonized from the inhabitants of the island of Paros who discovered the minerals of gold and marble and flourished in the industry of trading during the 7^th century BC. In 477 BC, Thasos became a member of the Delian League, which led to the revolt of the inhabitants, an unfortunate effort stopped from the Athenians who destroyed the walls of the city and their ships. Thereafter, the island was occupied from the Spartans followed again from the Athenians, bringing independence to Thasos. However, King Philip II of Macedonia took the control of the island, and Thasos became a member of the Macedonian Empire. The possession of the island was taken from the Romans in 197 BC who rebuilt the old town and the ancient theatre, and started the trading industry again. Around 565 AD, the island was ruled from the Arabs, liberated by Heraclites, followed from a series of pirate invasions. The Saracens conquered Thasos, until Nikiforos Fokas defeated them. In 1161 AD, a French count plundered the island and the inhabitants became slaves. After the partition of the Roman Empire, Thasos became a part of Byzantium. During the 14th century, Thasos came under the domination of the Genoese that contributed to the fortification of the island until the Ottomans captured the island. Then, Thassos was ceded to Mehmet Ali, the Vizier of Egypt in the end of the 15^th century. Thasos was reunited with the rest of Greece in 1912.
